Even with an activated copy of Office on your Mac, I know of no utility which can extract the product key.

If the final part of the purchase was a confirmation from Microsoft, you should have gotten an email titled "Microsoft Office for Mac — Order Confirmation". This should contain your product key. If the key came directly from the school and since they can't help, it may be on the purchase receipt from the school.
Though that would be a long shot. Otherwise, you're stuck. If by "digging" you mean to find the key from something in Office, that is, as far as I know, not possible. It's a one-time key that isn't actually stored on the drive as part of the installation, but simply authorizes the installation. Ah, good point Jake. I was reading it the other way; a file document with the key created by the OP.
Getting product key for Office for Mac
Of course, you're right. The Mac product key finder is something you can try. If I remember correctly, it works with Office but I do not know if it works with Office or The product key in Office was encoded in a plist file. I'm not sure how Office and encodes the key but since it can detect a change in hardware and must be activated again, it's possible the key is not stored anywhere on your hard drive.
Anyway, the Product Key Finder is worth a try.

Might be worth a try, if you can access your old HDD. Please note that you should be looking for these folders in the root directory of the drive on which OSX is installed-- NOT in your user directory. I noticed that the key finder program I linked above does not work with Office since it states that the product key for Office is encrypted.
